I have a wild animal, now what do I do?

What Information to Leave on the Help Line:

-If possible, please stay with the animal. It happens a lot that the animal can’t be found after leaving and calling for help

-If CWR is not available when you call, Please leave a detailed message with your name, number, address where the animal is located, email and please describe the animals condition to the best of your ability.

HOW TO PROPERLY HANDLE THE ANIMAL(S)

-Call the Helpline for support or advice: 805-482-7617

If you believe the animal(s) must be brought to CWR and you believe it is safe for both you and the animal(s), follow these steps:

  • Get a box large enough to safely hold the animal(s)
  • Make sure the box has plenty of air holes
  • Place a towel, soft cloth or paper towels at the bottom of the box
  • Gently place the animal(s) in the box. You do not have to wear gloves, but be careful not to get bitten and wash your hands before and after
  • Keep the box warm, dark, quiet, and away from children and pets
  • Do not place any food or water in the box
  • Do not look into the box once closed as it can stress the animal(s)
  • Call the Hotline to set up delivery of the animal to CWR or to discuss transport of the animal(s)
